As the state engages in a full-court press to distribute the COVID-19 vaccine, Ohio Director of Health Stephanie McCloud is
encouraging Ohioans to volunteer to help administer COVID-19 vaccinations in their communities. The health department is seeking help from:
- Physicians and physician assistants.
- Registered and licensed practical nurses.
- Pharmacists and pharmacy interns.
- Emergency medical technicians.
- Dentists and dental hygienists.
- Optometrists.
- Respiratory care professionals.
- Veterinarians.
Those interested in assisting should sign up through the
volunteer registry. Volunteers will be members of the Medical Reserve Corps and will fall under the state liability waiver that protects employees and employers. As more vaccine becomes available for allocation to providers, the need for volunteers is increasing. By registering early, volunteers can help ensure they’re ready and available when needed.
The state is currently in phase 1B of its vaccination plan, and this month began working to vaccinate teachers and other school personnel in order to meet Gov. Mike DeWine’s
goal of resuming in-person learning either full time or in a hybrid model by March 1. The state is distributing these vaccines in phases. In Northeast Ohio, schools in Medina and Summit counties are included in week one; Cuyahoga County in week two; Ashtabula, Portage and Richmond in week three; and Geauga, Lake and Lorain counties in week four.
Also eligible for vaccination at this time are Ohioans older than age 65 and those who have certain medical conditions.
