Brian Lane Moderates Case School of Medicine Forum on Hospital, Public Health Collaboration

In preparation for this week’s presidential debate in Cleveland, the Case School of Medicine hosted a series of virtual forums featuring leaders in the healthcare field covering pressing issues affecting global healthcare today. As part of this series, The Center’s President & CEO Brian Lane moderated a panel discussion on collaboration between hospitals and public health in response to COVID-19. Serving as panelists were:

• Terry Allan, MPH, Health Commissioner, Cuyahoga County Board of Health.
• Sam Brown, Vice President of System Operations and Logistics, University Hospitals.
• Alice Kim, MD, Infectious Diseases, Medical Operations, Cleveland Clinic.
• Todd Smith, MD, Deputy Chief of Staff, VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System.
• Brook Watts, MD, Vice President and Chief Quality Officer, MetroHealth System.

The panelists discussed their experience of setting up an incident command in their organizations, the innovations that were brought about in response to the pandemic, the work underway to address the disproportionate effects of the pandemic on communities of color, the strong collaborative relationships that developed among the hospital and CCBH as they worked together to protect and care for the community, and how these relationships that were built through the pandemic serve as the foundation for continued collaborative work that will extend into the future. This was the first in a series of four forums held over two days. The others were on the following topics:
